Wearable Technology: Red Hot or Red Herring?

Speaker

Overview:

2014 has been widely cited as the year wearable tech will take off and enter the mainstream. We’ve seen a lot of excitement and experimentation from tech and other players in wearables this year, but consumer adoption of wearable devices still remains fairly niche. Should we expect more from wearables? Will they ever have a useful place in consumers’ lives?
In this talk Robin Scarborough, of Market Gravity, will give an overview of the big market, consumer and competitor trends, and highlight the potential for wearable tech to deliver richer, more compelling service experiences – and why businesses and their customers will care.

Biography:

Robin Scarborough is a Principal Consultant at Market Gravity, a specialist proposition design consultancy that works with the world’s leading companies to design new services in an entrepreneurial way. Market Gravity’s unique combination of skills, bringing together researchers, commercial consultants and creative designers under one roof gives its clients the confidence to take a big idea and launch it into the market. Clients include Aegon, Barclaycard, Boots, British Gas and HSBC. Robin leads engagements across industries, but with a particular focus on retail financial services. See Robin’s profile on LinkedIn.

Wearable devices: NOT just another channel

Speaker

Overview:

For a brief shining moment there, with Responsive Web Design, we thought we’d solved the problem of design and delivery for diverse devices! Alas, no. RWD was a simple (obvious?) fix for a silly problem. Now, a new, far more complex challenge looms: wearable devices. Some are arguing they’re decades away from mass adoption; others are already calling them “just another channel” from which we must read and write content. In this session we’ll go through a content strategist/futurists vision on where it’s all going, and what we need to do about it as content and UX professionals.

Biography:

Noz Urbina is a globally recognised content strategist, consultant, and trainer specialising in multichannel content projects for marketing and technical communication. He co-authored “Content Strategy: Connecting the dots between business, brand, and benefits” and, since 2000, has provided services to Fortune 500 organisations and small-to-medium enterprises. Over the years Noz has helped organisations differentiate themselves with content, while saving money. Noz founded Urbina Consulting and is Strategic Marketing Director and Events Chairperson for Congility.com.  http://www.urbinaconsulting.com | @nozurbina

Wearable technology as a data collection tool

Speaker

Overview:

Dr Andrea presents a case study on using wearable technology as an ethnographic tool. The speaker will offer insights into using wearable cameras as an observational tool to conduct user-centred research; sharing experiences of exploring comfort in the home, and the pursuit to unobtrusively capture householder’s typical everyday activities. The talk will cover the tools and techniques used during the process including the pros and cons of conducting research in this way. Some of the findings of this study will also be discussed, as well as considerations for further use of wearable technology within UX research.

Biography:

Dr Andrea Burris is a User Centred Researcher who has recently completed her PhD entitled ‘Creature Comforts: An Exploration of Comfort in the Home’. Within the context of climate change her research took a user-centred approach to explore how comfort is experienced by householders, exposing the multifaceted and complex nature of the topic. As part of her research, Andrea used wearable cameras to capture householders’ everyday activities in their homes. Andrea has a background spanning human-computer interactions with mobile devices, human factors and psychology. See Andrea’s profile on LinkedIn.
