Online Event - Zoom

This month UXPA-UK is diving deep into the depths of imposter syndrome, second guesses, and psychological warfare that many UX designers and professionals in the tech industry experience. Join us on Thursday, April 23rd, 2020 for two talks from industry professionals.

We all have nagging self-doubt that burns a hole in the back of our mind, consistently telling us we aren’t doing enough or doing too much of the wrong thing. Are we designing well? Are we empathetic enough to our end users? The truth is, no one really knows what they’re doing.

Schedule:

Perfectionism, Impostor Syndrome and Anxiety in the Tech Industry.

Speaker

Jo Franchetti – Developer advocate, Ably.

Jo Franchetti

Working in the tech industry can sometimes make us feel inferior. It is easy to start believing that everyone knows more, or finds the work easier. When we’re surrounded by so many clever people, how can we not start to judge ourselves against them and our work against theirs? Impostor syndrome – the belief that you don’t deserve to be where you are, and perfectionism – a need to work to impossibly high standards, are exhausting. Learn how to spot these destructive thought patterns in yourself, how to manage anxiety and procrastination and how to start being kinder to yourself, because you’re awesome and you deserve to be here.

Jo is a developer advocate at Ably. She is passionate about Realtime Data, PWAs, and great CSS. She’s got 7 years of experience as a front end developer and has worked in various parts of the tech industry from startups, agencies, charities to large organisations. She is also a mentor and organiser at codebar.io where she is able to act on her passion not only for teaching good use of the web but also for improving the diversity and inclusivity of the tech industry.

Burnout in the Creative Industry

Speaker

Chevy Rough – Wellbeing & Performance Specialist.

Chevy Rough

Chevy’s philosophy is to keep solutions simple, empowering people to build a baseline of lifestyle choices, that work alongside “busy” lives. His unique style embraces stress, failure, and burnout not as things to fear, but as vehicles for growth.

Chevy is a Wellbeing & Performance Specialist, Public Speaker and Ambassador for the charities CALM and PARALLEL. Chevys work centers around educating people with the mindset and tools required for improving mental, physical and social health, ensuring they have the same level of energy and focus for loved ones, as they do for their careers. In 2015, Chevy retrained as a Coach after battling over a decade of addiction, while working in the corporate world. In 2017 he was selected by the BBC, to Coach 10 people with mental health challenges, to run the London Marathon. “Mind over Marathon” was an award-winning documentary. Chevy has worked with companies ranging from Spotify to Deloitte’s offering workshops, one to one coaching and keynotes.
