We have two excellent speakers who will share with you how to embed creativity in the design process and how to use playfulness, curiosity and experimentation to enhance your creativity.

Much of designer Brendan Dawes’ work has been fuelled by naivety; not knowing something lets you ask questions and becomes a framework for curiosity where the simple act of play leads to surprising and delightful creative discoveries. In this session Brendan takes you through his often chaotic way of working and how out of that chaos he’s managed to create all manner of work from Internet connected pieces of hardware to iPhone apps to large scale prints to even work that now resides in The Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Brendan Dawes is a designer and artist exploring the interaction of objects, people, technology and art using an eclectic mix of digital and analog materials, for himself and for clients around the globe. Fillings for rectangles is how he often describes his work. Over the years those rectangles have come in various shapes and sizes including websites, iPhone apps, posters, books, electronic circuits and pieces of plastic. Whilst his output takes on many forms, running through all his work are consistent themes of playfulness, curiosity and experimentation.
Embedding creativity techniques and tools into service design processes by Neil Maiden
Service design practices are now widely used by organisations, however the explicit use of creativity techniques and tools in these practices is limited. This session will explore how techniques and tools developed to deliver creativity support of different types have been successfully embedded in service design processes and artifacts in different large-scale projects. The session will include short demonstrations of different techniques and tools, as well as their outcomes.
Neil Maiden is Professor of Systems Engineering at City University London, where he was formerly Head of the Centre for HCI Design, and now co-leads the Centre for Creativity in Professional Practice. He is and has been a principal and co-investigator on numerous EPSRC- and EU-funded research projects. He is currently researching new forms of creativity support tool to be applied in domains from health-and-safety management and service design to emergency medical treatment and dementia care as part of the EU-funded Mirror and COLLAGE projects.
