The Changing Nature of Automotive UX

21
Jul
2016

18:30 - 21:00

Unruly, 42-46 Princelet St, London, E1 5LP.

Update: A limited number of tickets will be made available at 12:00 Friday 15th July!

Like most human habitats the automobile is characterised by multiple perceptions, emotions and social interactions. Drivers and passengers “live” and “socially interact” in their vehicles and thanks to mobile telephony and big-data they increasingly interact in a complex way with machines and with other people across both space and time. Given the sophistication of the context, it would be simplistic to continue to consider the motor vehicle as an environment characterised mostly by the performance of the driving task.

This evening’s talks address automotive design from a human centred design perspective, and discuss a set of issues and techniques whose focus is firmly on the human needs, desires and experiences which are critical to current and future vehicles. The talks span a set of perspectives and include new insights into the psychosocial aspects of mobility, the manner of establishing the customer desires and the automotive design task itself.

This event is being curated with the help of our friends at Brunel University’s HCDI Research Group.

We are pleased to announce the following speakers:

AutoHabLab: a new approach to automotive co-design

Speaker

Human Centred Design discovers latent needs and desires, supporting the achievement of desired futures for society. This talk introduces the concept of the Automotive Habitat Laboratory, a design-driven facility that provides a rapid and flexible environment for evaluating customer reactions to new automotive designs and to possible automotive futures. The talk will discuss the conceptual framework and will explore the business implications of the approach.

Professor Joseph Giacomin is the Director of the Human Centred Design Institute (HCDI) of Brunel University. He teaches undergraduate and postgraduate university modules in Human Factors with particular emphasis on matters of perception and emotion, and guest lectures widely at universities, governmental organisations and businesses. He has produced more than 60 professional publications including a recent book of thermal photography titled Thermal: seeing the world through 21st century eyes, and provides consultancy services to the design and manufacturing sectors.

Mobility + Disability + Inclusivity: Supporting an Independent Automotive Experience

Speaker

Farnaz will share major findings and key insights from her latest project with a leading car scheme for disabled people. She will explore matters of personal mobility, disability and inclusivity based on first-hand lived experiences of people with disability and their support network. The ‘Values and Requirements Framework’ outlines project’s key considerations for designing a meaningful and positive mobility experience.

Dr Farnaz Nickpour is a Lecturer in Design at the College of Engineering, Design and Physical Sciences at Brunel University. Farnaz is the leader of the Inclusive Design Research Group (IDRG) in the UK and a fellow at the Royal Society of Arts (RSA) and Human Centred Design Institute (HCDI).

Farnaz’s work focuses on improving the lived experience not only on a physical but also psycho-social level and goes beyond more conventional dimensions of inclusive design such as ageing and disability, to address less typical lifestyle exclusions such as obesity. Farnaz has worked directly with diverse groups of end users, designers, various stakeholders and the public in the design of products, services and tools that ‘include’ and ‘inspire’.
